What is shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of bodywork from Japan that combines acupressure, yoga and massage therapy, all into one. I perform shiatsu on the massage table and my receivers are fully clothed. It is always a full body treatment because we believe that the body functions as an interconnected system. The goal is to achieve holistic balance and well-being. Shiatsu relieves muscle aches and pains, like massage, and also relieves internal organ issues, like acupuncture does. It also helps with things like sleep issues, digestive issues, immune system issues, chronic illness, and emotional health, as well as helping with pain and injury.
What happens during a shiatsu treatment?
I’ll do some relaxing treatment directly to your muscles to relax your body, and also some relaxing stretches that will help with improving the quality of movement. The work is as deep or as light as you prefer, I will adjust according to what you need. Shiatsu should always feel relaxing. You’ll wear soft comfortable clothing like sweatpants/workout pants, a cotton T-shirt, and fresh socks.
How does it work?
Shiatsu is a hands-on treatment that uses pressure to stimulate the body’s energy flow and promote balance. Each session is tailored to what your body needs. Unlike traditional massage, we sometimes use different tools like our thumbs and elbows. It’s deeply relaxing and will feel really good. Usually after one session you will likely notice some benefits.
How often should someone get shiatsu?
Once a week for six weeks if there is an issue that you want to work on. After that, a lot of people get shiatsu once or twice a month in order to stay pain-free and address any other issues as they arise.
How is shiatsu different from massage?
It’s different in the kind of training and scope of practice that I have. I am effective in working with aches and pains in the same way as a massage therapist, but I have specialized training that helps with internal organ health and emotional health as well.
